Morphological Awareness

Morphological awareness is a crucial predictor of reading success and a powerful component that can be taught to improve reading outcomes. One activity I do to help students think about the morphemes in a word is to compare like-sounding words and sort them based on whether or not they contain the target morphemes, or spell them after thinking about their morphemes. The Wordwall games ask you to sort, and the Flippity links are for spelling.  The order of the words in Flippity change each day.

Cloze Activities

These activities help students recognize how derivational suffixes (and some prefixes) are used.

Morpheme Tiles

Latin Morpheme Tiles

These are common prefixes, bases and suffixes (and connectives) used in words with Latin origins.  Use these to build words and have fun explorations!

High Usage Morphemes

These words include many of the most common prefixes, bases, and suffixes. To play, on your turn, identify the parts of the word and earn one point for each part identified. You can earn additional points by giving examples of other words that use the same morpheme.

For example, if the word is “respectful,” identifying the parts “re-,” “spect,” and “-ful” earns three points. Providing example words such as “replace,” “inspect,” and “prideful” earns three more points. You may award extra points for definitions or require them, if appropriate.
